The Bluest Eye

Toni Morrison’s book is about the effects of racism on how black women view beauty standards. The illustration on the cover depicts a blue baby doll eye as mentioned in the book. The two different eyes represent the motif of comparison.

The lettering was done using stencil to create a stagnant and unsettling visual element. I chose to take the most attention-grabbing and meaningful words critics used to describe her book for the back cover. The medium used to create the illustration, lettering, and speckle effect is a scanned-in image of watercolor on textured paper.
